Justices from around Africa gather in Arusha for Gender and the Judiciary Conference
ARUSHA, June 11, 2018 —A conference on ‘Gender and the Judiciary in Africa’ jointly organized by the Judiciary of Tanzania and the World Bank Group kicked off today with a call to participants gathered from across Africa, to do more to address legal barriers that affect women in their countries.
"Equal access to justice is an integral part of human development and poverty eradication, and is a fulcrum for a human rights-based approach to economic development. There cannot be a well-functioning justice system that spurs economic growth, human development and poverty eradication, if more than half of the population comprising of women, do not access justice,” said Chief Justice Prof Ibrahim Juma.
“To ensure trust in, and effectiveness of, any judicial system, the judiciary needs to broadly reflect the racial and gender composition of a country,” said Dr. Sandie Okoro, World Bank Senior Vice President and Group General Counsel.“Gender balance in the judiciary can have an impact on the gender-responsiveness of courts, particularly in cases where gender is an issue, such as discrimination on the basis of gender or gender-based violence. Without true access to justice for women, the cycle of poverty will be perpetuated and women and girls will not have a chance to lift themselves and their families out of poverty.”
"The role of the judiciary in enforcing the rule of law is central to providing an enabling environment for economic growth that is inclusive for all citizens,” said Bella Bird, World Bank Country Director for Tanzania, Malawi, Burundi and Somalia.
As gender equality and an effective judiciary are both essential to achieving sustainable economic development and building strong societies, the Conference brings together Chief Justices from across Africa, as well as judges, and other judicial officers to discuss ways in which the judiciary not only guarantees the fundamental right of every woman to live free of discrimination and violence, but also promotes women’s pivotal role in social and economic development.
To that end, the conference which brings together chief justices, judges, magistrates and other concerned stakeholders from across Africa, and is scheduled to end on Wednesday June 14, will focus on: the role of the courts in addressing gender within the judiciary; women’s access to justice; and gender-based violence, three interrelated topics that pose challenges to social and economic development and the general well-being of women, families and society in general. The principal goal of the meeting is to share understanding of these challenges, international good practices as well as innovative approaches and gender-specific strategies to advance judicial sector development.
