There have been only TEN FIRST LADIES on the planet who are extremely unique because they were married to Presidents and later gave birth to Presidents!
Although there are seven continents of the world namely AFRICA, EUROPE, ASIA, SOUTH AMERICA, NORTH AMERICA, AUSTRARIA and ANTARCTICA but 70% of these unique First Ladies hail from Africa, the world's second largest continent. Oh AFRICA my motherland!.
Betterstill, one of them is none other than our very own MAMA FATMA ABEID AMAN KARUME who is also a member of the Board of Trustees of YANGA, the most successful team ever in Tanzania!.
Hereinbelow is a list of that rare breed of women:
1. FATMA ABEID AMAN KARUME:
She is the Co- mother of our nation as she was the wife of the First President of Zanzibar, the late ABEID AMAN KARUME who served as the First President of Zanzibar from 12.1.1964 to 7.4.1972 when he was assasinated. MAMA FATMA, on the 1st November 1948, birthed AMAN ABEID KARUME who went on to become the 6th President of Zanzibar and served from 8.11.2000 to 3.11.2010.
2. MAMA NGINA JOMO KENYATTA:
She was the third wife of the first President of Kenya, the late JOMO KENYATTA who served from 12.12.1963 to 22.8.1978. On the 26th October 1961, at 11.10 AM at Aga Khan Hospital, Nairobi, MAMA NGINA gave birth to UHURU MUIGAE JOMO KENYATTA, the sixth child of the late founding President. UHURU is the fourth and current President of the Republic of Kenya.
3. SIFA MAHANYA:
She saw her husband, the late LAURENT DESIREE KABILA, rise to power, after having moved from Zaire to Tanzania in mid 1970s, and become the 3rd President of DRC on 17.5.1997 before he was assasinated by his bodyguard on 16.1.2001. Ms SIFA gave birth, on 4.6.1971, to JOSEPH KABILA who is the fourth and current President of DRC.
4. RUTH WILLIAMS KHAMA:
She was the wife of Botswana's First President, Sir SERETSE GOITSEBENG MAPHIRI KHAMA who was President between 1966 and 1980 hence she served as the inaugural First Lady. Her son, IAN SERETSE KHAMA, born on 27.2.1953, served as the fourth President of Botswana from 1.4.2008 to 1.4.2018.
5. SENA SABINE MENSAH:
She was the First Lady of Togo for 38 years as her husband, the late ETTIENE GNASSINGBE EYADEMA who was the fourth President of Togo from 1967 to 2005, died in office in 2005 paving way for her son, FAURE ESSOZIMNA GNASSINGBE EYADEMA, born on 6th June 1966, to become the fifth President of Togo.
6. PATIENCE DABANY:
She was the First Lady of Gabon for 42 years before her husband, the late El Hadji OMAR BONGO ENDIMBA, the second President of Gabon who served from 2.12.1967 to 8.6.2009, died in 2009 and her son, ALI BONGO ONDIMBA took over on 16.10.2009 as the third President of Gabon.
7. ADELINE SYLVIA EUGENIA ANA YEBOAKU AKUFO ADO:
She was the wife of the fourth President of Ghana, His Excellency EDWARD AKUFO-ADO who served from 31.8. 1970 to 13.1.1972 when he was deposed in a coup d'etat and later mother to His Excellency NANA AKUFO-ADO, born on 3.1944, who is the current President of Ghana.
8. ABIGAEL JOHN ADAMS:
She was the wife of the second US President, the late JOHN ADAMS, who served from 1797 to 1801. She is considered as one of the most intelligent First ladies the world has ever seen. During their courtship and marriage, ABIGAEL and JOHN exchanged over 1,100 letters, many filled with intellectual discussions on government and politics and not udakuz!. Her eldest son, JOHN QUINCY ADAMS, served as the sixth US President from 1825 to 1829. ABIGAEL died in 1818, seven years before her son became President.
9. YUK YOUNG-SOO:
She was the wife of the third South Korean President, PARK CHUNG- HEE who served from 1963 to 1979 when he was assasinated and the mother of Her Excellency Ms.PARK GEUNE-HYE, born on 2.2.1952, who served as the eighteenth President of South Korea from 2013 to 2017. First Lady YUK YOUNG -SOO is the only First Lady to have given birth to a female President.
10. BARBARA GEORGE BUSH:
She was the First Lady of the United States from 1989 to 1993 as the wife of the 41st US President GEORGE HEBERT BUSH. Among her sixteen children is GEORGE WALKER BUSH, born on 6.7.1946, who served as the 43rd US President from 2001 to 2009.
NB: MAMA MARIA GABRIEL JULIUS NYERERE, who served as the inaugural First Lady of Tanganyika & Tanzania, would have joined the above unique club had her son, Hon. CHARLES MAKONGORO NYERERE, been elected by CCM as its presidential candidate since he was one of 42 CCM stalwarts who had collected nomination forms in 2015.
